Protect Your Floor With The Faber Limestone Densifier

Moisture is one of the main threats to natural stone installation, especially highly absorbent ones such as limestone. Take rising damp for instance. Here, water carries soluble salts from below the floor, and these salts recrystallize and get deposited once the water evaporates from the surface. It results in an unsightly powdery residue on the surface. Cases on damp marks on the floor caused by spills, flaking and the infamous pop-ups on your installation- these are not issues that you want affecting the surfaces in your residential or commercial premises. Treating the stone with water-repellent sealers is key, which is where products like the Faber Limestone Densifier come in.

The water issues are exacerbated during the mechanical sanding and polishing process. Here, due to the intense heat that is generated as the surface gets ground down, water is used to protect the discs and the floor itself. It also aids in the lubricating the surface, that way optimal polishing results can be obtained. However, with limestone, it's not just that easy. The absorbent material will soak up loads of the water, which will become an inconvenience later on, due to the lengthy drying time that will be required. This is in addition to the issues caused by excessive moisture within the natural stone, from efflorescence to iron staining. The Faber Limestone Densifier has been developed to aid the polishing process, reducing the amount of time and resources spent.

This is an eco-friendly formulation. The Faber Limestone Densifier is V.O.C-free, and does not pose a threat to the health of the persons applying it onto the surfaces, or those in the establishments where the floors have been treated with the product. It’s a100% water-based formulation, particularly intended for limestone and lime-based surfaces which are usually difficult to polish because of their high porosity and the water absorption capacity. What’s more, it adds to the effectiveness of the subsequent treatments that are to follow. For instance, it increases the performance of the stain-proofing treatments, thus reducing your workload when it comes to the routine cleaning and maintenance.

How The Faber Limestone Densifier Works

Before treating the surface with the product, the area needs to be cleaned. The dirt particles that are on the material will affect the effectiveness of the formulation. The surface should then be allowed to dry.

  • With the polishing process:

Here, the product is applied to reduce the amount of water that is absorbed by the surface, cutting down the drying time. Thus, you get to work on larger surface areas, and reduce water usage during the operations. The product itself has a 10 to 15 m2/L coverage rate.

It is applied to floors that have been sanded with the 200/400 grain size, after which the polishing continues up to the 800 grain. At this point the required finish treatments can be applied, as opposed to the conventional modes where the polishing would have needed to be carried out to the fine grain levels of 1500 to 3000. The Faber Limestone Densifier thus enables you to get to the finishing stage much faster, that way the floor care process takes up less time and resources. The polishing process can be undertaken with products such as Faber A2 Mix, A3 Yellow, or the Cristal Pad White Pad formulation.

Note that before the Faber Limestone Densifier is applied, dry sanding is carried out, and after the treatment, the polishing must be done with water. This second stage of polishing is done at least after 4 hours from when the treatment was applied- though it is recommended that you wait till the following day to proceed, that way the Faber Limestone Densifier will have spread and completely cured. For that initial sanding, you can still choose to have it carried out wet, though it will require a waiting time of 24 to 48 hours for it to dry. Alternatively, applying the Faber Limestone Densifier right at the start of the process will enable you to proceed as normal, speeding up the drying after the 200-400 grain size is used, after which the product should be re-applied.

  • Protective properties of the Faber Limestone Densifier

Since it is a hardening sealer, this formulation increases the ability of the surface to resist everyday scratches and abrasion, thus enhancing the durability of your installation. The water-repellent properties prevent the issues that would have arisen due to excessive moisture being absorbed by the natural stone. It achieves this without affecting the breathability, or even altering the colour of the natural stone installation.

The treatment can be done on the limestone slabs and tiles before installation, as directed in these approaches:

  • It can be at the industrial production line, or at the building where the slabs are to be set up. For the production lines, equipment like silicone rollers or sprinklers are used, depending on the setup of the industry. Here, it is recommended that you contact the Technical Division of Faber, in order to obtain specific information that will be suitable for you your particular industrial application.

  • On-site, the slabs or tiles are dipped in a container with the Faber Limestone Densifier, and then allowed to dry. When immersed in the container, they are then allowed a 10 to 15 minutes dwelling time before being removed, and the product is redistributed over the surface with a clean cloth. Allow at least 24 hours before laying the treated slabs.

  • You can also use a brush, roller or lambswool applicator to apply the product. Simply spread an even layer of the Faber Limestone Densifier onto the slab, give it 5 - 10 minutes, then begin redistributing the residue. Start with the top and edges, then give the slabs 1 to 2 hours to dry. Reposition them and then treat the bottom, following the same process.

Maintaining Surfaces Treated with the Faber Limestone Densifier

When it comes to the routine cleaning, you can use products from the same brand. For instance, Faber 30, Neugel, or AlgaFLoor can be used. To stain-proof the surface, you can use Faber B1 700, or the Hidro 150 formulation.
