Wood Stains - Learn How To Use It
If you want to change the colour of your wood floors, you will have to use a stain. A wood stain is a water based or oil based colour that has to be applied on raw wood material to change its colour. The wood stain has no protective quality, it is just a colour. You can apply 1 or 2 coats of wood stain. The more coats you apply, the stronger the colour. Unlike paints or oil sealants, the wood stain will be fully absorbed by the wood. The fibre of the wood will be visible in a different colour. This is the definition of a wood stain.
Wood Stains - Water Based Wood Stains
Water based wood stains can be overcoated with any type of water based floor lacquer or varnish. The wood stain will dry in about 1 to 2 hours and you can seal it with 2 to 4 coats of lacquer or varnish. If you just stain the wood but you don`t seal it, it will get water damaged.
Wood Stains - Oil Based Wood Stains
Some of the most unique colours and the most easy to use wood stains are the oil based wood stains. The coverage area for classic oil based wood stain is somewhere around 50 sq meter per L. All oiled based wood stains will have to be sealed with two pack water based floor lacquers or solvent based floor varnishes. Single pack water based floor varnishes will not bond well and you will run the risk of having to re-sand the area. Most wood stains are suitable to use on floors and furniture.
Wood Stains - How To Apply
Changing the colour of a wood surface with a wood stain is pretty easy. Sand the area to remove all the pre-existing finishes and remove all the dust particles. Vacuum the area well. Stir the wood stain tin. For smaller areas you will just need a good quality cloth and a pair of gloves. Soak the cloth in stain and rub it against the wood surface until the stain is fully absorbed and the colour of the surface treated looks nice and even. Do not apply more pressure in one area than in the other areas because you will create different depths of colour on the same surface. The wood will absorb whatever it can and you will have to remove the excess. Job done. If you want a stronger colour, apply a second coat within 2-3 hours.
For bigger floor surfaces you will have to use a floor pad and a buffing machine. Staining wood floors is a bit more demanding than staining furniture. Pour a bit of stain on the floor, put a microfiber pad on it, put a white floor pad over the cloth and buff the floor well until you create an even surface all over the floor. If you notice that the colour is getting lighter, pour a bit more stain on the microfiber cloth. Buff the floor well for about 20 min. Then seal the floor with a water based or a solvent based varnish.

If you think that your grey wood stain is not dark enough, add some black. If your light green wood stain is too light, add a few drops of blue or dark green wood stain. Use your imagination to create fun colours. It is always recommended to do sample tests on small areas. Just because some people highly recommended a particular type of wood stain it does not mean that it will look great when you use it.
The same type of wood can look different with the same wood stain. The level of light, chemicals used over the years and the amount of time that particular area was treated, can determine the final colour. Some people had two bedroom floors stained with x wood stain. One bedroom got a lot of light over the years while the other didn`t. After the staining, both bedrooms looked different even if it was made from the same material.
*** after you are done staining, always wet the cloths used for staining. Soak it in water. It is well known that some wood stains react with whatever chemicals are in the microfiber cloths and can start fires***
