Wood Stains
Fine Quality Wood Stains For Floors And Furniture
Without wood stains, the wood care industry would be very limited. While solid wood has a unique natural look, sometimes we get sick of the same colour and we want to be able to change it, make it more modern or try to match some colour patterns within your home or business. You can do so with the help of wood stains. There are so many types of wood stains suitable for so many types of projects and applicable in so many different ways. We will explain to our customers how to use the most popular wood stains from the best brands, how to seal it, wood preparation and the whole process in detail from the bare wood to the finished product.
Wood Stains | Oil Based Wood Stains
There are two types of wood stains, water based wood stains and oil based wood stains. We will only focus on the oil based wood stain because it looks more natural, it preserves the wood better and is easier to apply. We sell three ranges of wood stains products from Bona, Tover and Chimiver. Combined, between the 3 brands of products, our customers are offered over 40 colours of wood stain compatible with pretty much any type of unsealed wood surface.
Wood Stains | Surface Preparation
A wood stain is a colour dye that has to be applied to the unsealed wood to change its colour. All oil based wood stains can “only” be applied to a raw surface or to a wooden surface that was sanded and all the old sealers removed in full. The wood stain has to be able to fully penetrate the wood surface, otherwise it will never dry.
- Assessing the surface and making a plan for sanding the surface. Based on the type of pre-existing sealer, the surface can be sanded from the 40 grit sanding paper up. Rougher sanding paper than 40 grit sanding paper can be used only in cases where the wood surface has to be leveled up or heavy duty polyurethane sealers have to be sanded off. Remember to always sand moving along with the fiber of the wood and not against it.
- Start by sanding the surface with the rough sanding paper until all evidence of an old sealer has been sanded off. If the sanding process was started with 40 grit sanding paper, then the next step should be 60 grit, then 80 grit and then 100 grit. Do not skip between the grits to avoid creating visible scratches marks from the rougher sanding paper. The surface can be sanded up to 120 grit finish but in some cases, that might be too smooth for the wood stain to penetrate evenly.
- The tin of wood stain has to be shaken well for at least 10 seconds to make sure that an even composition is created. Be sure to use gloves to avoid staining the skin for a long period of time. The surface can be stained with a microfiber cloth or an oiling pad when the surface is large and it cannot be done by hand.
- Soak the microfiber cloth in the wood stain tin and drain it slightly. The cloth has to be semi wet and not soaked. Apply a thin layer of wood stain moving along with the fiber of the wood. Allow the wood fiber to absorb whatever amount of wood stain it needs and remove the excess. A stained surface will look coloured but not wet or full of uneven patches. When done with an area, move along to the next area without walking on the stained area for a few hours.
Wood Stains | Sealing The Wood Stain
Chimiver wood stains and Tover wood stains will require overcoating after the initial application. Bona Craft Oil 2K Wood Stain can be applied in 1-2 coats without an extra coat of lacquer needed to provide the full protection. All Chimiver, Bona or Tover wood stains can be overcoated with a two pack water based floor lacquer from any of those three brands. To maximize its natural looks and to make sure that the surface is fully protected against high traffic, we recommend the use of matt or semi gloss water based floor lacquers. Only two pack water based floor lacquers are suitable for sealing an oil based wood stain.
Wood Stains | Realistic Expectations
The most essential thing to keep in mind is the fact that a wood stain can look totally different when applied to different types of wood or in some cases to identical types of wood. The way that particular wood surface was maintained, the kind of humidity exposure, sun damage, harsh chemicals, etc, all that can affect the final colour. Just because Chimiver Old Oak Wood Stain was used on your mother’s floor and you love it the way it looks, your hardwood floor might not end up looking the same. To be 100% sure that X wood stain is the one that you like, a sample should be done on your own floors. Also, a wood stain might look one way before lacquering and darker | brighter after 1 coat of lacquer.
Wood Stains | Coverage Area
Again, this is a tricky one. If the wood surface was sanded correctly with all the proper grits and the process was respected in detail, the estimated coverage area should be 30 to 60 sq meters per 1 L. Do not ignore the word estimated. The actual coverage area will be decided by the type of wood (some wood fibers like pine, are very absorbent), the quality of the sanding process, the application system (better coverage when applied with a floor buffer) and the skill of the applicator. One coat is more than enough if applied correctly. The second coat is possible but some wood stains might not dry right unless applied by a professional or with professional tools. In theory, 1 L of wood stain will do 1 large living room + the dining room.
Wood Stains | Mixing Up Colours
If you could not find the right colour within our 40+ colours of wood stains, you can also mix up wood stains. The essential thing is to only mix wood stains from the same brand. While mixing wood stains from a number of brands can work well, reactions can also happen. Sometimes the reactions happen on the spot while sometimes the colour starts losing its colour after a few weeks and the surface can end up patchy under the lacquer.
Another essential thing when mixing up colours is to mix up enough colour to cover the whole surface as mixing up an identical mixture again is nearly impossible. So before making a plan, measure the whole surface and make sure that enough wood stain was mixed to cover the whole surface.
Wood Stains | Disposing Of The Cloth
After you have completed the project and you are happy with the results, you need to make sure that all the microfiber cloths used within the process of wood staining are soaked in clean water before being disposed of. The static energy that accumulates inside the cloth from the friction with the wood, can ignite the solvent that is contained in the wood stain. This information should not be ignored.
Wood Stains | Different Brands
Not all wood stains are the same. Not all wood stains are applied in the same way. Not all wood stains have the same coverage area and not all wood stains are available in the same colour range. For example, a mahogany colour from Chimiver looks nothing like the mahogany colour from Tover. The Bona wood stains also known as Bona Craft 2K Oils are thicker than Chimiver or Tover and have to be mixed with a hardener before being applied to the wood. The Bona Craft Oil 2K do not require overcoating with a water based oil but 1 or two coats of a matt finish is recommended especially when dealing with stairs or very high traffic areas.
Tover Wood Stains | There are 28 distinct colours of wood stains from Tover. The composition of these stains is thicker, it covers a lot of surface and is suitable mostly for professional use. To maximize its coverage area a floor buffer is required for application. The Tover Wood Stain range is sold in 1 L tin and its estimated coverage area is around 30-50 sq meters. The same wood stain can be used for staining wood floors, wood furniture, wood doors & frames and generally all types of wood surfaces. The Tover Wood Stains have to be overcoated with a two pack water based floor lacquer or a solvent based floor lacquer. A beautiful range of colours that are highly appreciated by interior designers and architects.
Chimiver Wood Stains | Chimiver wood stains are a bit thinner than the other types of stains. Being thinner means that it penetrates deeper and it cannot be scratched easily when the wood surface gets scratched. Chimiver wood stains dry very fast and are easily applicable with a cloth or a floor pad. The wood stain can be overcoated with any two pack water based floor lacquer from Chimiver, Tover or Bona. Chimiver Wood Stain is highly appreciated by the professional wood floor refinishing industry. Its easy application system, high coverage area and outstanding natural look finishes have transformed the way the floor sanding contractors stain wood floors. Even better, the wood stains are low fumes and can be successfully used by DIY users.
Bona Wood Stains | Bona wood stain range is called Bona Craft Oil 2K. This is two pack floor oil that is sold with a hardener and it can be overcoated with any two pack water based floor lacquer from Bona, Tover or Chimiver. This particular type of oil can be used as the main sealer in a two coats system or it can be used as a wood stain and then overcoated with a few coats of a matt two pack water based floor lacquer. The Bona Craft Oil 2K is a professional type of wood stain mostly used by the professional trade. To be able to apply it evenly and successfully, the contractor has to be using a low speed floor buffer and some type of application pad. The product has to be mixed up with the hardener before being applied to the wood surface. Like all other types of wood stains, this product can only be used on unsealed, clean and dry wood surfaces. There is a wide range of colours available and those colours can actually be mixed up as well.
Below, we will detail some information about all the colours of wood stain available from all the brands sold by Cleanfast. We want to stress the fact that the same stain can look 100% different on different types of wood. Do not purchase large quantities of wood stain before being sure that the colour selected is actually the colour you want and a small test sample was done on your wood surface. While most wood stains can be applied with a clean cloth, a floor buffer should be used when staining large floor areas.
