Staining wood floors and wood surfaces is not a job just for professionals. With a bit of common sense and a few basic tools, anyone can achieve amazing results. The most important thing about wood staining is to understand that only clean wood with no finish can be stained. If your floor or your furniture has some type of finish on it, you will have to remove it in full before staining. A wood stain has to penetrate the wood surface about 1 mm so it cannot do that if the wood is sealed.
Sand the surface well with 40 grit sand paper, then 60, follow with 80 and finish with 100 or 120 grit sandpaper. When the surface is finished free, dry and dustless, you can prepare for staining. You will need gloves, a cloth and a tin of wood stain. Stir the tin well to create an even composition and soak the cloth in the stain. Rub the cloth against the wood until it is evenly coated. The wood will absorb all it can and the job is done. If some areas are darker than others, rub a bit more in that particular area. 1-2 hours later apply 2 coats of water based floor varnish from Junckers. Job completed.
