Get Rid Of Rust Stains With The Faber Mar Gel Plus
Rust stains are particularly a frustrating issue when it comes to natural stone like marble and limestone. The nature of these materials enables the stain to easily penetrate deeper into the stone, and conventional cleaning simply won’t get rid of them. The stains have different causes. It could be a gas cylinder or metal object that was left on the wet floor, or in wet environments like the outdoor patio. Faucets, showers and similar installations can have iron particles winding up on the surrounding stone structure, causing the stains to develop. Plumbing leaks, grout cracks- the resultant iron deposits on the stone will lead to staining. Whichever the case, you want to get rid of those unsightly spots. However, considering the sensitivity of the natural stone to pH, you want products that will be tough on the stain but gentle on the structure itself. That way you won’t end up ruining your installation and paying hefty costs to get additional repairs done. For this, turn to the Faber Mar Gel Plus.
Deep stain removal
The Faber Mar Gel Plus has been formulated to tackle rust stains that are on the surface of the installation, also penetrating deep into thickness of the material to ensure that they have been completely removed. This even works for the compact lime-based installations, like those with brushed or polished finishes. The product is so powerful in this regard that it does not need to work with any other chemical to dissolve the rust stains. The gel formulation is easy to apply, and is ideal for limestone marble, travertine and acid-sensitive materials. A water-based product, you can also use the Faber Mar Gel Plus on concrete, cementine, cement-based grout widths, or even the marble-cement agglomerate, or marble-resin agglomerate. In fact, you can also apply the gel on walls and other vertical surfaces.
To complete the process, after the Mar Gel Plus extracts the rust stains, the next measure will be to treat the surface with the Faber Oxidant. It will remove even the residue that is remaining within the structure. You can thereafter continue with the routine maintenance for surfaces treated with the Mar Gel Plus using formulations from the same brand, such as AlgaFloor or Neugel. When dealing with the stubborn dirt, you can use the Faber 30 or, depending on the type of surface, the Faber Deterfug formulation.
How To Use The Faber Mar Gel Plus
It comes ready to use, so no dilution will be needed. Here’s how to go about the application:
- Pour the Faber Mar Gel Plus directly onto the surface. You can use a brush or spatula. Ensure that the surface has been covered with a thick layer of the formulation.
As you remove the rust stain, you’ll notice a purple compound being formed when the Faber Mar Gel Plus comes into contact with it. This happens much quicker and in deeper intensity depending on the closeness of the rust stain to the surface.
- Allow the product sufficient dwelling time to dissolve the stain. Here, the specific time will depend on the stain being treated, its intensity, plus how long it had been left to set into the surface. It’s recommended that you carry out a test on the product’s reaction to determine how long you should wait for your particular situation.
As a general guide, when dealing with recently formed rust stains that are pale and haven’t had a chance to set deep into the surface, one usually waits for between 5 and 20 minutes. For those that have gotten deeper into the material, and formed a medium tone, the time can take from half an hour to 3 hours. For the dark rust stains that have penetrated deep through the material, the time taken to extract them can extend from 4 to 10 hours. For the latter cases where the stain removal is projected to take a longer period, it’s recommended that you apply quite a thick layer of product, so that you won’t have to add more because of it drying out.
- Remove the mixture of product and residue from the surface. Soak them up with cloths or absorbent paper towels in case you’re working on a small surface. For the larger areas, you can bring out your squeegee to speed things up, before following through with the absorbent paper or cloth to ensure that all product has been completely removed. Apply Faber Oxidant to the treated area to remove that purple compound that was formed when the Mar Gel Plus reacted with the rust stain. Note that the Oxidant formulation should remain on the surface for twice the duration taken by the Mar Gel Plus to remove the stain.
- Rinse the surface using clean water, and allow it to dry. After this, it will be ready to use.
For the deep rust stains on the natural stones, you can use a mechanical polisher to pass over the area to boost the surface absorption and resultant penetration of the product. To further speed things up, use lower grain sizes for the polishing. You can test whether you can use a mechanical polisher on the surface before you start with the application.
Note that for the cases where the product is allowed to stay for extended periods on the surface, and based on how sensitive the material being treated is, and the type of surface, it may get dull. Don’t worry- you can quickly restore the shine with a Faber polish. You are also advised to apply a stain-proofing treatment that is compatible with your particular type of installation.
DOs And DON’Ts When Working With The Faber Mar Gel Plus
- DO clean the surface first to remove the dust, debris and grime from it.
- DON’T use the product on wet surfaces. Ensure that it is dry before application.
- DO apply the Faber Mar Gel Plus during the cooler parts of the day. You should avoid using it when the surfaces are overly heated.
- DON’T mix it with other solutions. The Faber Mar Gel Plus has been developed to be used alone.
- DO strip off layers of wax on the surface, if any, beforehand.
