Flat Mops Versus Classic Mops

Professional Flat Mops Versus Classic Mops

We all have floors and we all need to wash them. Some people wash their floors a few times per day while others wash their floors a few times per week. It all depends on the type of floor and the type of traffic. A neglected floor is likely to start absorbing dirt, the surface will become stained, there may be unpleasant odours and in some cases, the surface will be slippery.

The classic way of washing floors with a bucket and mop is becoming less and less popular. Most people are sick and tired of all the tools needed to wash the floors, like mops, buckets, different types of chemicals, sponges and others. People just want to use one tool, little water and if possible, one product for all floors.

This is where the flat mopping system comes in handy. The entire system is very compact, very easy to use, capable of reaching under the beds, in all narrow corners, around the skirting boards and inside the grout lines.

Normal Cotton Mops | Flat Mops Versus Classic Mops

A cotton mop is designed to wet the floor and remove the dirt in theory. But that is often not the case because most people don`t wash their cotton mops as regularly as they should, they use the same cotton mop to wash the greasy kitchen floors and then the fancy hardwood floors, and so on. A cotton mop does not have any scrubbing capabilities so it should only be used for regular maintenance.

Issue 1: Odours

A cotton mop kept wet at all times is likely to develop a very unpleasant odour over a relatively short period of time. When that happens, the floor might get cleaned within the process of cleaning it, but when it dries, the entire room will be overpowered by a strong damp odour.

Issue 2: Bacteria

Depending on the type of surface and the type of cleaning agent, some cotton mops develop bacteria that is moved from one area to another.

Issue 3: Moving dirt around

Very few people have the finances, the time or the willingness to use a different mop head for each individual area. This is the case even within the commercial trade. By washing a filthy bathroom floor that is full of urine residue and then moving to wash the kitchen floor, only bad things can happen. The harmful dirt and bacteria is being moved around the building.

Issue 3: Creating slippery surfaces

Some areas that are used to cook or to handle equipment, are likely to be much dirtier and full of grease, oils and different types of oily residue. When this residue from that particular area reaches the reception area or some other areas that are used by different people, it can overglaze the floor with a layer of slippery grease. This can cause a lot of accidents.

Issue 4: Oversoaking the floors

Most of the dirt on most floors is usually generated by the excess water released during the process of washing the floor. The cotton mop does not have a system to regulate the release of water so the water from the mop will be released unevenly all over the place. This dirty water usually deposits in the grout lines or within the pores of the floor. The issue becomes very problematic when the laminate floors or hardwood floors are oversoaked and they crumble apart or get water damaged.

Issue 4: Low coverage

A cotton mop can only cover so much floor before it dries up. Imagine having to wash a 2000 sq meter floor in a school or in an office with a normal cotton mop. The effort required is incredible while the productivity is pathetic.

Flat Mopping Systems And Spray Mops | Flat Mops Versus Classic Mops

The flat mopping system is not a new invention but the new microfiber flat mop heads are much improved. Business is booming in Ireland and the amount of buildings that were built over the past 10 years to serve as offices or public buildings has increased. There are a lot of new modern floors and large floors to be washed and people want it done faster, better and cheaper. The classic cotton mops, Kentucky mops or smaller mops are totally inadequate for the level of work required, so the entire industry has started focusing on alternatives and more effective ways of cleaning floors with less cleaning products and way less water.

Spray Mops

A spray mop is a very clever floor tool that contains the frame of the mop, the handle, a bottle that releases the product or some hollow space inside the handle & a trigger or a button for spraying the product. The user can mix up the right dilution. Select the right flat mop head, press the trigger and start washing the floors.

A standard cotton mop can wash 80 to 100 sq meters of floor per hour. A flat mopping system can wash 200-250 square meters of floor per hour. The advantage of the spray mop is the fact that the water level is fully regulated and if the chemical is left in the spraying system for weeks, it does not go off because it is not exposed to the elements. If a normal mopping solution is left inside a bucket for 1 week, it will become very stinky.

The flat mop heads industry has created so many types of flat mops, velcro and pocket flat mops, that there is no way of not finding the right one for your particular needs.
