Organic waste is an asset to the environment. Food waste, pruning, paper products, those leaves that were collected when raking the yard- they can all be used to add value to the ecosystem- which will be obtained when they are taken through the composting process. Take the soil’s physical structure for instance. Compost improves the porosity and drainage of the heavy clay soils and makes the sticky soiling more workable and friable. Since it reduces compaction, it improves root penetration into the soil, promoting healthy plant growth. For the light sandy soils, compost comes in handy to improve the water retention, by binding together the particles of the crumbling soil. All this contributes to reducing soil erosion. Then there is the chemistry of the soil itself. Here, the compost modifies and stabilises the pH of the soil. It directly produces both micro and macronutrients, and also prevents leaching by holding the nutrients within the root zone. This is also beneficial in cutting down the reliance on the synthetic fertilisers that are sourced from fossil fuel processing, thus reducing the greenhouse effect. The soil’s own biology is enhanced, with organisms from the microscopic nitrogen-fixing bacteria to the larger earthworms getting a conducive environment to thrive. Ensuring that the food waste and other organic material that is produced in your premises gets directed to the composting facilities aids in this process. The Earth2Earth Compostable Sacks 25.5″ x 36″ come in to enable you to achieve this. Here is more that you can expect from these units:

  1. Heavy duty

The strength and size of these bin bags enables them to be used for handling loads of organic waste. This is particularly beneficial for the commercial kitchen and catering waste, where lots of it is generated on a daily basis. From the waste that is produced during the food preparation, all through to the leftover food, paper waste for business premises, food packaging, and even the leaves, cut flowers and other yard waste around the home- the Earth2Earth Compostable Sacks 25.5″ x 36″ will be up to the task.

  1. Meets EN 13432 standards

This is a harmonised standard that has been developed for compostable and biodegradable packaging material. It was introduced back in 2000, following the EU Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste (94/62/EC). It has been adopted by the national standards bodies of the EU member states. Here, key tests and a strict pass/fail criterion is used. It looks at different aspects, including:

  • Disintegration, where the sample of the product being tested is mixed with organic waste, then placed in composting conditions for 12 weeks- after which duration 90% or more of the material fragments should be smaller than 2mm;

  • Biodegradability, which looks at the microbial action on the product under the composting conditions, where the by-products are carbon dioxide, water and new cell biomass. The carbon dioxide amount released is compared to a reference material, and the amount produced by the sample should be at least 90% that which is produced by the reference/control material’

  • Concentration of heavy metals, where the amount should be low, in order not to compromise on the quality of the compost. The concentration is checked against limits, such as with zinc where the upper limit is 150mg/kg and mercury is 0.5mg/kg. Any trace amount of heavy metals within the sample should be lower than the limits;

  • The effects on the soil attributes such as pH, salinity, and bulk density, plus the total nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus content within the compost.

The Earth2Earth Compostable Sacks 25.5″ x 36” adheres to the EN 13432 standards, and has undergone independent testing by the Austrian TÜV body (formerly Vincotte), to prove it. It comes bearing the TÜV certification. As such, you can rest assured that it will be suitable for the composting process.
